The Dog and Tobacco Room
I am the old man alone in a hotel
waiting for a ride north to Mayo Pain Clinic.
Loneliness is only a theory when we have
the past, which is a vast tumble of events.
Sort and re-sort and never win.
We live with our memories, a backpack
of mostly trash we can barely carry.
A motel in Utah gives me
the âdog and tobaccoâ room.
Zilpha and my cigarettes are proud.
On television I see hundreds
of cage-free piglets romping.
Things are getting better for some of us.
